(Web Desk) – On her 91st birthday, Google’s homepage has displayed an art design of Madam Noor Jehan on their home page in her honour. The doodle of the queen of melody shows her clad in a purple sari with her patent style- flower in her hair.
Born on September 21, 1925 in Kasur, Punjab her birth name was Allah Rakhi Wasai. Better known for her honorific name Malik-e-Tarannum (queen of melody), she began her career in India and then worked in Pakistan after the partition. In spite of partition she kept on mesmerising her fans in both parts of the sub-continent .
She received many honourary awards such as Pride of Performance in 1965 , Tamgha-e-Imtiaz , Sitara-e-Imitaz and has also received more than 13 Nigar Awards for Best Female Playback Singer. The queen of melody has a record of singing more than 18,000 songs in various Indian and Pakistani regional languages including Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi and Sindhi.
Noor Jehan still holds the record of singing largest numbers of film songs in the history of Pakistani cinema. Alongside her successful singing career Noor Jehan was considered to be the first female Pakistani film director, in the movie Chan Wey which she co-directed with Shaukat Hussain Rizvi. She also acted in many Pakistani films.
She was survived by six children from two marriages. Her legacy remains the symbol of peace and love and continues to mesmerise the entire world with her melodious voice.
