Ghulam Ali’s concert cancelled in New Delhi

NEW DELHI – Renowned ghazal singer Ghulam Ali’s concert in New Delhi scheduled to be held on November 8 has been cancelled, reported the Indian media.

According to reports, the concert has been called off as the singer cited personal reasons. His son Amir said that the singer was wary of fringe elements and was waiting for conditions in India to calm down.

His concert in Mumbai was also suspended in wake of the threats and objections by Shiv Sena after which he was given an invitation to perform in Delhi by the Aam Aadmi Party government.

Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra, who handles the law, art and culture portfolios in the Arvind Kejriwal-led government, invited Ghulam Ali to perform at a concert in the national capital.

“Sad that Ghulam Ali is not being allowed in Mumbai, I invite him to come to Delhi and do the concert. Music has no boundaries,” Mishra wrote on Twitter.

The supporters of Shiv Sena while protesting stated that they don’t want to build any cultural bond with Pakistan. They said that strict action would be taken if Pakistani singer performs in the concert.

“Your soldiers and civilians are being killed on the border. We will not allow Pakistanis to come and perform on our soil,” Chitrapat Sena Akshay Badrapurkar, who led a delegation to the hall, said. They threatened to launch a “Sena-style” protest if their demand was not met.

Later, Ghulam Ali, in an interview to NDTV, said that he was not angry, but very hurt.

However, the music maestro will participate at Lucknow Mahostav starting November 25 on the invitation of Chief Minster Akhilesh Yadav to perform at the 10-day event. He will perform on Ghazal night on December 3.
