KARACHI: (, Web Desk) – 2 people lost lives while 6 including Senior Superintendant Police (SSP) Special Investigation Karachi Farooq Awan got injured as a result of loud explosion that rocked Karachi’s Defense area on Thursday evening, . Farooq Awan is the cop who had arrested a key figure involved in the murder of American journalist Daniel Pearl. Daniel was murdered in Karachi on February 1, 2002 by Al-Qaeda militants.
According to police, SSP Farooq Awan was targeted in Defense Phase 4 when he was getting off the police mobile van. However, SSP Farooq survived the attack fortunately. Explosion was so loud that it was heard at large distances. Several police vans were seriously damaged. The explosion caused a 20-feet deep pit on the road. Dead have been identified as Abdul Ghaffoor and Kaleemullah. 3 people were arrested by police from the spot.
According to bomb-disposal squad, a small car, parked on the roadside, was used for explosion. 55 kg explosive material was used through a remote-control device. Terrorists used highly explosive material. Ball-bearings in large number have been found from the spot.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has condemned Karachi blast and ordered immediate inquiry of the matter. Former President Asif Ali Zardari, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Altaf Hussain, Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr. Tahirul Qadri have also condemned the attack. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has directed IG Sindh to submit a report of the attack. He also ordered immediate arrest of the people responsible for this attack.
